Framing the Library: A Photo Walk Through Appleton's New Public Space

At the end of March a bunch of Northeast Wisconsin photographers gathered at the brand new Appleton Public Library for an after-hours photo walk.  It was an absolute pleasure for us to explore this space designed with so much intention.

Unless you are a professional photographer with a booked schedule, finding places to snap photos during Wisconsin's cold weather months can be challenging.  When all of our outdoor public spaces are frozen or drizzly, we're grateful to have partnerships with places like libraries to keep our skills in practice and our membership in touch with each other.

The four walls of our indoor photo walks also give us a great opportunity to play with basic rules of composition, perspective, and exposure.  As with any art, having limited "supplies" forces our creativity into new directions and coaxes us to work on the basic premise of photography - how do we capture what's interesting about the world in front of us.

Have a gander at our group flip book from the day, where we captured the nooks and crannies on all three floors.  You'll also see views from the many gorgeous windows, and even a snap or two of after-hours staff (and roaming photographers).  Our group really dug into that space to show you what is interesting about it.  If you haven't been to the new library yet, these photos will fuel your curiosity about it.

Many thanks to the Appleton Public Library staff for the warm welcome into your glorious new facility!

Our Community Photo Walks are open to photographers of all skill and experience levels, and using any type of camera.  Stay tuned for details about our next meet-up in June when we're hoping to head up to Green Bay!
