Celebrate photography as a medium without limits.
ALT: will explore what happens when artists step outside the expected and redefine what a photograph can be.
This exhibition aims to embrace alternative creations in every sense;
from cyanotypes and salt prints to film soup, unconventional printing surfaces, digital manipulation,
sculptural photography, emulsion lifting, collage, and beyond. If it challenges convention,
questions process, or expands the definition of photography, it belongs here.
“Alternative” isn’t just about technique, it’s about mindset. It’s about curiosity over perfection. Process over predictability. Risk over routine.
ALT: may reference photography’s earliest methods; others may push the medium into entirely new territory. What unites them is a willingness to experiment; to blur boundaries between analog and digital, object and image, photograph and artifact.
This exhibition invites viewers to reconsider the photograph not just as a captured moment, but as a constructed, transformed, and
re-imagined experience.
Emma Hitzman
Emma Hitzman was raised in the rural Midwest and has lived in Northeast Wisconsin for a majority of her career. Hitzman's artwork and research centralize around lethargy, digital environments, and how they are explored through alternative photographic processes.
Jorge Ariel Escobar
Based in Milwaukee, Escobar is a queer, Latinx image-maker whose photographic practice explores intimacy, desire, and the ephemeral nature of queer connection. His photographs center on chance encounters between queer men, rendering the male form with tenderness and vulnerability through a softer lens.
Terri Warpinski
Warpinski is a lens-based mixed media artist and curator living and working in De Pere, WI. She and her husband created newARTSpace, a non-commercial artist-driven exhibition and event space in downtown De Pere.
Nick Dvoracek
Nick Dvoracek has been involved in Pinhole Photography since arranging a workshop with noted pinhole photographer Ruth Thorne-Thomsen while teaching photography at Knox College. After teaching summer middle school workshops at the turn of the century, he began exclusively working in pinhole, using cameras he designs and makes out of packaging cardboard. Since 2015 he has written the blog Pinholica.
