Seeing the light: camera controls beyond the automatic

Photo 101 | Seeing the Light: Camera Controls Beyond the Automatic
$80.00

Saturday, May 9, 2026 | 10:00am - 4:00pm

Join us for our first ever Photo 101 class, taught by  Tom Leininger, Lecturer for photography at the University of Wisconsin—Oshkosh's School of Media, Arts and Communication.

This 6-hour class is designed as a foundational crash-course focused on helping you get off Auto Mode and better understand exposure in a practical, hands-on way.

The day will include dynamic instruction on topics like ISO, aperture, and shutter speed - with short photo walks mixed in to apply what you've learned by shooting, reviewing, and discussing.

This workshop includes:

  • Guided instruction and all necessary materials

  • Digital Cameras available to borrow for class

  • Lunch, coffee, & water

  • Discounted print of your favorite photo from class

Tom Leininger has been teaching photography and digital art at UWO since the fall of 2019. Before moving to Wisconsin, he taught at a number of different schools around the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex. Prior to academia, he was a newspaper photographer in Indiana. He believes that learning the camera basics is the first step in taking control of the photographic medium. You can build your creative ideas on this foundation to express yourself visually, which is the goal.
